Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus a.k.a. Pompey the Great: one of the three Roman generals constantly at war for power, but who was defeated by Julius Caesar in the Roman Civil War!
Pompey the Great (September 29, 106-September 28, 48 BC) was one of three generals of Rome who ruled his own territory. He also took credit for defeating Spartacus and the gladiators after Crassus originally did it, but Pompey received the hero's welcome. Pompey believed he could defeat Julius Caesar in a civil war, but was defeated decisively and later assasinated by his own men at the dealings of Ptolemy XIII of Egypt.
